It is known to play a vital role in functions of the nervous, circulatory, respiratory, defense and reproductive systems and also to act as an important signaling molecule. Lithium salts are widely used in the treatment of a range of mental illnesses from mood disorders to schizophrenia. Injections of lithium chloride showed a four-fold increase in nitric oxide levels in chick embryos. We were therefore interested in the effect of NO and lithium both individually and jointly on the Coomassie Brilliant Blue (CBB) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) interaction model studied earlier in our laboratory. Spectrophotometric studies of these interactions in terms of binding parameters are presented. Our findings support the earlier observations of lithium chloride leading to an up regulation of nitric oxide levels.

Effect of Severe Hyperthyroidism on Concentrations of Nitric Oxide-producing Enzymes in Liver of Male Rats

Introduction: Thyroid hormones play an important role in normal function of liver and hyperthyroidism can cause liver dysfunction. Thyroid hormones affect nitric oxide (NO)-producing enzymes in liver. The aim of this study is to investigate effects of hyperthyroidism on protein levels of three isoforms of NO synthase (NOS) enzymes, including endothelial NOS (eNOS), inducible NOS (iNOS), and neu...

Monitoring of Serum Nitric oxide in Patients with Acute Leukemia

Nitric oxide (NO) is a molecule required for many physiological functions, produced from L-arginine by NO synthases (NOS). It is a free radical, producing many reactive intermediates that account for its bioactivity. Sustained induction of the inducible form of NOS (iNOS) in chronic inflammation may be mutagenic, through NO-mediated DNA damage or hindrance to DNA repair, and thus potentially ca...
